  • Understand and apply concepts of geometry and measures, including properties of shapes, angles, perimeter, area, and volume.
  • Develop problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning to tackle a variety of mathematical challenges.
  • Use Mathswatch to complete assignments, access lesson resources, video tutorials, interactive worksheets, and online feedback
  • Pass the end of course GCSE Maths Initial Assessment

Class format and activities

This course will help you develop a strong foundation in maths through interactive lessons, discussions, practice exercises, and assessments. You will work on real-life maths problems to develop both your numerical skills and your ability to apply them in different situations. In addition to improving your maths knowledge, you will also work on your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to help you better understand and solve maths word problems. You will be expected to complete homework regularly to reinforce your learning and prepare for your final assessment.

Entry requirements

Before enrolling, you will need to complete an initial assessment and an interview to evaluate your current maths knowledge, skills, and ability to study at this level. There are usually no specific qualifications required to join this course, but you are expected to have Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths and English, or have studied Key Stage 3 Maths or equivalent.

What you need to know before you enrol

Before joining the course, consider your commitment to studying maths and working towards a GCSE. You must attend at least 90% of lessons and be punctual. To keep up with the course, set aside at least 10 hours per week for study and homework. You will also need access to a computer or tablet with an internet connection to complete online assignments.

What you need

You will need a Casio FX-83GT CW scientific calculator (or similar versions such as FX-83GTX or FX-85GTX). You will also need writing materials, a notebook, and a geometry set. To complete your homework, you must have access to a computer or tablet with an internet connection. A mobile phone alone will not be suitable for completing all assignments effectively.

What you can do next

If you complete this course with excellent attendance and meet the learning outcomes, you will be offered a place on the GCSE Maths Foundation or Higher course starting in September 2025. Your tutor will review your attendance, homework, and assessment performance to decide the best progression route for you.
