What you will learn

For experienced students who want to further their skills and develop a personal and contemporary approach to painting, whether figurative or abstract. The course focusses on studio practice, working from your own drawings, photographs, memories or imagination. . You will learn through self-directed painting, individual tutorials, technical demonstrations, lectures, gallery visits and group discussions. Entry is by interview with portfolio of work.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Use sketchbooks and studies to develop new work
Understand and manage complex colour relationships
Discuss modern and contemporary paintings with improved understanding
Use layers of paint to create visual and physical textures
Make finished paintings that are personal and experimental

Class format and activities

This is primarily a practical course and you will spend a lot of time making artwork and developing your own independent practice. Painting is understood in a broad context and may include elements of drawing, collage, photography, digital images and 3-Dimensional work. Your tutor will help you to develop on-going individual work through one-to-one tutorials and group discussions. There will be group tasks and workshops to explore aspects of painting practice such as drawing and colour mixing, as well as technical demonstrations by your tutor. You will be shown the work of interesting and stimulating artists through books and illustrated lectures. There will also be occasional group visits to galleries. This course will culminate in an exhibition onsite in the Barry Till Gallery at Morley College.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course requires approval from the tutor. They will ask for images of your recent artwork and answers to some questions about your previous experience and interests. You should be keen to learn, and willing to engage with a wide range of modern and contemporary paintings. Use the ‘Enquire now’ button above to contact the course tutor.

What you need to know before you enrol

This is an intensive course and we work hard during each session. To get the most from the course, you will need to think about, research and make work between classes.

What you need

You should bring a sketchbook and notebook to every class. You will need oil or acrylic paint, brushes, palette knife, charcoal, ink, etc. but these will vary depending on the direction your work takes as the course develops. A digital camera and/or smartphone with a camera is essential for documenting work.

What you can do next

Students form this course have gone on to study Fine Art at degree level, both Ba and MA. Another progression route is the Fine Art Mentoring Course at Morley College, which meets on selected Sundays through the year.
