What you will learn

Thank you for your interest in our Swing Dance course at Morley College! As with all our classes, the college requires minimum numbers for Swing Dance to run, and as Lindy Hop is a partnered dance, we also need enough people to take the roles of Lead and Follow. So, once you are enrolled, we'll be contacting you shortly to ask whether you'd prefer to dance: Lead, Follow, or, Switch (meaning you don't mind which). While you do not have to enrol with a partner, it does help us meet our minimum number and balanced ratios! So, if you know anyone who might be interested in joining you, please do extend the invitation. Here is a link you can can use to book: https://www. morleycollege. ac. uk/courses/course/swing-dance/ (Please note: following our short course Swing Dance for Absolute Beginners, the main autumn term Swing Dance course runs from October 4th to December 6th). If enough people enrol, but we don't have a workable ratio of Leads and Follows, the tutor will switch to teaching other Swing Dances that rely less on these roles, such as Jazz Steps (no partner), Charleston and Group Dances. These may also be taught as part of the expected syllabus. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Swing Dance tutor directly: nikki. santilli@morleycollege. ac. uk

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Dance Solo and Partnered Charleston figures
  • Be familiar with and be able to dance portions of The Lindy Chorus (choreographed by Frankie Manning) or alternative style, according to lead / follow ratio
  • Confidently dance a couple of classic Strolls.
  • Demonstrate a deeper knowledge of the history of Lindy Hop (subject to Lindy Hop being the course focus) and how the modern/contemporary scene debates and continues its legacy..
  • Understand the history of the Charleston and Big Apple dances as well as current etiquette at social swing dances.

Class format and activities

The class will begin with a group stroll to warm up. The main part of the session will be working on Lindy Hop (or suitable equivalent according to lead / follow ratio), rotating partners. There will be a break, during which we will watch a short video clip and discuss it (this may be footage of original dancers from the 1930s onwards, or of contemporary swing dancers, or other related material) Two sessions (end of half term and end of term) will be dedicated Social Dance Practice in which the session will be a social dance where the tutor will be on hand to offer advice and tips.

Entry requirements

You must have taken the 3-week Beginners Course, or be able to demonstrate the 6-count and 8-count Lindy Hop figures to take this course. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, have any serious health conditions or a history of injury. Please inform your tutor if there is any physical activity you have be advised to avoid.

What you need to know before you enrol

Lindy Hop is a partner dance, so you will need to be comfortable dancing with another person in close physical proximity. Lead and Follow roles are not gender-defined and anybody is welcome to take either role. A reasonable level of fitness is required. If you have any physical restrictions, please make the tutor aware of this before the start of class. Be aware that each session involves on average 1. 5hrs of dancing and 15 mins pausing for discussion.
