The winners of The Engine Room, our biennial international sound art competition, have been announced, with First Prize being awarded to UK artist Laura Daly for her installation “Shadowland”.
The winners were announced at a private view event in Morley Gallery, where the 20 finalists had their work on display. Second Prize went to “Year in Review” by George Cloke from the UK, and “Autonomous Sense Object” by Nolan Lem of the USA took Third Prize.
Commenting on the competition and her win, Laura Daly said: “The breadth and scope of The Engine Room’s finalists represent an exciting picture of what is happening in sound art. Situating new works on an international platform, it’s a great opportunity for emerging sound artists to raise their profile and engage with practitioners from different parts of the world.
“To be selected as a finalist amongst such strong contenders and then given first prize for ‘Shadowland’ is a great honour and I’m looking forward to building on this achievement. Having studied Sound Art at Morley College several years ago, it is a testament to the quality of the teaching that I continue to develop my work independently with such success.”
The 20 finalists were selected from 177 entries, which were submitted by artists from 30 countries worldwide. The competition was judged by The Wire publisher Tony Herrington, sound artist and composer Dr Annie Mahtani, and sound artist Janek Schaefer.
The exhibition, which also includes an original commissioned piece by artist and creative coder Tim Murray-Browne, is now open to the public and free to enter until Thursday 1 June. Morley Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 11:00-18:00, and on Saturdays from 12:00-16:00. The College will be hosting a range of related events, including talks, performances and taster sessions at both the Morley College site and the nearby IKLECTIK Art Lab.
