The Nand Series
The Nand Series, 2014
Etchings with aquatint on 250 gsm Somerset Satin paper
Memory and mortality and the search for freedom are the themes the London-based artist Sonia Martin focusses on. The titles of the eight etchings bear witness of her themes, for example, Gate, Ghost of a Tear, You Remind Me of Someone, Am I Dreaming? and Man in the Dark.
The images arose out of sketches she made during a residency at Chhaap Foundation in India 2014. They convey aspects of the Residency House and neighbourhood, visits to the Baroda Museum, and the people she met. The resulting drawings were etched on zinc plates in the Nand Residency print workshop, and she completed the printing of the plates at the Morley College print room, London.
After studies in Fine Art Sonia Martin completed a Masters Degree in printmaking. Her work has been exhibited widely in solo and group shows including the Royal Academy, New Hall College, the Barbican, the Bankside Gallery and the Contemporary Art Society.
Awards include Fundacion Valparaiso Residency, Spain, Chhaap Foundation Residency, India, Cork Printmakers Residency, Ireland, Fundacion Amazonia Residency, Bolivia, GX Gallery award, Winsor & Newton Watercolour Prize, Eaton Fund for Artists and the Oppenheim-John Downs Memorial Trust Award.
Her work is in collections including University of the Arts, Murray Edwards College, Southwark Art Collection, Cork Printmakers, Southampton City Art Gallery, Chhaap Foundation, Morley College, Lady Margaret Hall, Fitzwilliam Museum and the Ashmolean Museum.
