“2016, for me was the Year of great changes and the beginning of an exciting (if sometimes challenging!) journey.
In my 37th year of life, I took my first official step towards my goal to become a fashion designer. I enrolled in the Fashion Design evening course at Morley College.
With amazing tutorials, guidance and lots of patient from Cathy Reynolds, during that short course, I learned about the main pillars of the fashion design process. Learning about the research and development process and working on my sketchbook made me realize how badly I always wanted to be a fashion designer. The course boosted my confidence and fed my hunger to learn and develop my skills further.
With my tutor’s support, I took my 2nd step to becoming a fashion designer by applying for the Fashion Design – Access to HE course. With garment construction, drawing skills and fashion illustration classes, along with portfolio preparation and academic skills classes, I was pushed out of my comfort zone to explore and maximize my skills in drawing, fashion design and essay writing .I built my portfolio with page after page of work with new research, explored fashion illustration techniques, fabric manipulation, 3D modelling on the stand and much more.
The Fashion Courses at Morley exposed me to a wide range of both Fashion Design skills, that I am using now on a daily basis at work, and academic skills. With these skills I was able to achieve an offer of a place to study at the London College of Fashion, I can’t wait to begin my next chapter in September: as an aspiring fashion designer and start studying at BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear.
Now, I am working on my final collection and making final garments for my first ‘grand finale’ in July which is the graduation Fashion Show. I also have a part time job for small retail business in Bermondsey – dealing with online orders, and face to face with customers.”
