South of the River: Morley Catwalk Show 2019

Our Access to Fashion and HNC and HND Fashion students ended their academic year with their annual catwalk show, entitled South of the River.

Catwalk Show 2019 1The catwalk show is the highlight of the year for all of our Advanced and Higher Education Fashion students, giving them the opportunity to present their original garment designs on professional models. This year's show was planned, managed and promoted entirely by the HND students, offering them practical experience of both creating a fashion collection and staging a live show.

The show was named "South of the River" in recognition of Morley's home turf and how the vibrancy, diversity, and individuality of the local area has inspired our students' creative work, and garments modelled at the show responded to a wide range of briefs and concepts, such as "Beauty Myth", "Hidden Concealment", and "Gender Undone". Completing the looks were items of jewellery that had been created and supplied by Morley Jewellery Certificate students.

Catwalk Show 2019 4While all of the garments on display were exceptional in terms of both their construction and imagination, two prizes were awarded after the show in recognition of students' work and innovation. HNC student Alina Grosu received the Silver Anatomie Prize, while the Gold Anatomie Prize went to HND student Kirsty Griffin-Pool. Alina's designs in the show included a striking white body suit (above), part of a collection created as an exploration of the theme of mental health, while Kirsty's collection included a white origami circle dress (below).

Catwalk Show 2019 3A number of the HND graduates will now move on to our new top-up degree in Fashion, which is validated by Ravensbourne and launches in September this year.
