Passing of Bev Walters, Former Principal of Morley
We are sad to announce that Bev Walters, who was College Principal at Morley from 1991-2003, passed away on 1 February 2019.
Bev took over the running of Morley at a difficult time in the College's history, and under his leadership we were brought back on course so we could continue to thrive. In 2002 he oversaw the opening of the lift by the Holst Room in our main building, accompanied by MPs Simon Hughes and Kate Hoey, and Phillip Waddington, one of our oldest students, who was in his 90s at the time.
He was also the subject of a portrait by painter Maggi Hambling CBE, who has taught at the College since 1969. The painting was commissioned by the Friends of Morley in 2003, and is currently on display outside the Library at Westminster Bridge Road.
His departure message, published in the Spring/Summer 2003 edition of the Morley Magazine, read: "Being Principal of such a place [as Morley] is a delight. Making sure that the spirit of Morley is guarded, while sacred cows are dispatched, time warps are dissolved and challenging and attractive opportunities to learn and new approaches to learning are introduced.
"Morley is an eccentric, special place, a gourmet college where people enjoy learning and helping others to learn.
"Thank you for having me. Being Principal of Morley has been a privilege."
