Passing of former Morley Head of Music, Dr Robert Hanson

We are sad to announce the death of Dr Robert Hanson, former Head of Music at Morley College 1991 to 2007, who died on 7th January.

Robert Hanson

He will be remembered among the great music makers who have been employed here, serving nearly as long as his most distinguished predecessor, Gustav Holst.  He brought new ideas to the department, re-founded a chamber choir for which he wrote memorable pieces such as his 40-part motet And There Shall Be No Night There, a companion piece to Tallis’ Spem in Allium. He was a lucid and knowledgeable teacher whose history series Music in Time and lecture-recitals with the Allegri String Quartet were hugely appreciated.  Other important contributions were establishing a recording studio, and innovations in curriculum, in particular introducing more non-classical classes.

During the last ten years, he continued to compose, conduct choirs and bring his history lectures to different audiences.
