“I used to be a primary school teacher, but would like to work within the sustainable fashion industry, looking at improving the way fashion is driven forward without harming the planet.

I overheard someone talking about the Access to HE: Fashion course by chance at an open day and decided to apply. I took out an Advanced Learner loan when I accepted my place to cover the cost of the fees.

The course covers a wide range of areas within fashion, giving you an overall view. You gain knowledge and skills in illustration, pattern cutting, and studio photography, and the projects link everything together and help you to think about what you might like to specialise in.

I personally enjoy 3D modelling the most. It’s a tough module as it’s so technical, but you learn the basics of working with pattern blocks and clothes making, and later in the year you make thee garments which you have designed yourself. I am currently making test pieces of my final designs, and once they are made up I will be showcasing them at our end of year catwalk show.

The tutors have been amazing – it’s said a lot but it’s true. The course teaches you all the basics and gives you the opportunity to develop your own project, but the tutors help you to find your own strengths and style, while also helping you to work on things you are not confident in.

I’d recommend the course to anyone who is serious about studying fashion or working in the fashion industry, and anyone who wants to study fashion at university but isn’t sure what to specialise in. The tutors have supported me with building my portfolio and interview preparations.”

An Access to HE Course at Morley could be your first step towards studying at university and leading to your desired career path.
