New Recipient of Art Scholarship

As we welcome many new and returning students to Morley this academic year we are also pleased to welcome a new scholarship student. Cara Rainbow is this year’s recipient of the Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Art Trust scholarship.

The scholarship is is offered in memory of the celebrated painter, Zsuzsi Roboz, and offers the recipient a one year part-time programme of free classes, personal tutoring from a professional artist and teacher, and an opportunity to exhibit work at Morley Gallery at the end of the year.

We find out more about Cara and her creative practice.

“In 2013 I graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London with a First class honors and a deeper understanding of my art practice. Up until this point I have been working independently to develop new and existing fictional characters through live performance, ceramics and writing.

During my year at Morley College I hope to gain an extensive understanding of ceramics so that I am able to explore where this can overlap with performance, storytelling and installation art and to interact with staff and students across the College.

Daily life inspires me to question assumptions, explore taboos and create art that invites conversation about societal politics. Through a multidisciplinary approach I create fictional characters that represent different people, cultures and generations who are trying to find a place for themselves in the world, where they belong and don’t, or have the right to be and not to be.

My art is an attempt to create an abstract reality where genuine emotional responses are heightened by the sincerity of the work. This aim is to leave the audience uninhibited by the boundaries of their current realities.”

Look forward to Cara’s final exhibition next year.
