Morley tutor to perform The Great Piano Quintets

Morley piano tutor Martino Tirimo will perform at St. John’s Smith Square this month.

Martino Tirimo will perform in The Great Piano Quintets on Wednesday 17 February at St. John’s Smith Square, featuring the music of Beethoven, Schnittke and Brahms.

Martino has been teaching piano at Morley for 43 years, since 1973, and is currently teaching the Piano Masterclass course.

As child prodigy, Martino was performing concertos from age eight and when only twelve he conducted seven complete performances of ‘La Traviata’, with soloists from La Scala, Milan. Winning international competitions in Munch and Geneva helped launch his international career and he has since performed all over the world with major orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Dresden Staatskapelle, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Cleveland Orchestra, London Symphony, Philharmonia and numerous others. Conductors he worked with include Barbirolli, Boult, Marriner, Masur, Rattle and Kurt Sanderling. In 2010 alone, he gave over 100 concerts including the complete works of Chopin at Kings Place, described by critics as ‘a colossal feat’.

His numerous recordings for EMI, Warner and other companies include the complete works of Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Janacek, Schubert’s 21 Sonatas and the Concertos of Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Tippett (with composer conducting). For one Rachmaninov Concerto recording, one of EMI’s best-sellers, he won a Gold Disc. In 2002 he founded the Rosamunde Trio which has since performed widely in Europe and the US. He also works with talented
young pianists, twelve of them winning first prizes at international competitions.

His repertoire encompasses over 80 Concertos and nearly the entire solo works of the great composers. In 2011 he was awarded the Nemitsas Foundation Prize for Excellence in the Arts and Sciences. The ‘Daily Telegraph’, described him as ‘a pianist of vision’ and ‘an inspiring poet of the piano’, whilst ‘Music and Vision’ declared that ‘Tirimo’s playing belongs to a past generation of ‘greats’.
