Morley Gallery invites entries to Inspired by… V&A competition

Morley Gallery calls all adult learners to enter its Inspired by… competition in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museums.

Learners enrolled onto an adult education course are invited to submit new art, design or craft work inspired by the V&A’s extensive collection by Friday 11 March 2016.

A panel of V&A curators will be selecting artworks for exhibition at Morley Gallery in May and June 2016 with special prizes being awarded by the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation, the V&A and The Linbury Trust.

Makers can enter artwork in nine categories: Ceramics, Glass & Stained Glass, Jewellery, Sculpture, Textiles & Fashion, Printmaking, Drawing & Painting Digital Media including Photography, Video and Sound; and works in any medium inspired by the V&A Museum of Childhood.

Reactions

Emmajane Avery, Director of Learning and Visitor Experience, V&A: “The V&A is so pleased to be working with Morley College again on the Inspired by… competition and exhibition. The quality of work in 2014 was superb and the display at Morley Gallery offered a fitting celebration of both the artists’ skills and the inspiration provided by the V&A’s collections. I very much look forward to seeing the entries for 2016.”

David Hughes, Chief Executive, NIACE: “The Inspired by… project is a great example of the social, personal and community benefits of learning. By presenting last year’s awards I saw firsthand the effort and creativity that people put into it and the fantastic quality of art they produced. I hope that even more adult learners enter the competition this year, to highlight how participating in learning gives us the confidence to have self-expression and to offer something back to the world. Learning is life-affirming and we should, as a society, value that highly.”

Roxanne Gilbert, 2014 Inspired by… winner (category: jewellery): “Learning how to do something you love is such an amazing feeling and being recognized for doing it well is so rewarding. Winning the Inspired by… competition in 2014 gave me the confidence to try and turn my passion for Jewellery making into my career.”

Dr Andrew Gower, Principal of Morley College: “As a college that throughout its history has specialised in the arts, Morley is delighted to again be collaborating with the Victoria and Albert Museums for this high profile and prestigious competition. Inspired by…is a celebration of the imagination, skill and commitment of adult learners in art, design and associated crafts.”

Angie Boyer, Editorial Director, craft&design magazine: “For more than 30 years our magazine has supported and promoted the work of professional designer makers, particularly those who are at the start of their creative career paths, so we are especially delighted to be supporting this year’s Morley Gallery Inspired by… competition and exhibition. This national arts competition provides a unique and important opportunity for adult learners to showcase their work, work that has been inspired by pieces in the great, world renowned collections of the V&A Museums. For those with pieces featured in the prestigious Inspired by… exhibition, perhaps this could be the first step towards their own work one day inspiring others at the start of their creative journeys.”

Inspired by… 2016 is organised and hosted by Morley Gallery in collaboration with V&A Museums and supported by NIACE, craft&design magazine, the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation and the Linbury Trust.
