Bill Laurance to Perform with Morley Big Band in Morley Jazz Series
We’re excited to announce that our artist in residence, Bill Laurance, will…
“Exhilarating” was the one word answer provided by many of the participants of Morley College choirs when asked to describe their experience singing for 77,100 spectators at the Rugby World Cup quarter final between Australia and Scotland at Twickenham Stadium last weekend. Another choir member commented “I can now say I have performed to a bigger audience than most top recording artists, and in front of royalty”.
Forty-five members from Morley’s Chamber Choir, Opera School, College and Staff Choirs sang the anthems of Australia and Scotland at rugby’s biggest showcase after Morley was invited to participate in the occasion by Rugby World Cup organisers.
If nerves were being felt they certainly were not shown as the participants walked out onto the pitch in coliseum-like surroundings and the deafening roar of the crowd at the completion of the anthems brought smiles of accomplishment and congratulations all around. Eager spectators even requested photos with the choir members. Other spectators in the crowd included Prince Harry, Princess Anne and Nicola Sturgeon.
As a reward the choir members then watched the match unfold from the luxury of an executive box high up in the stadium which turned into a nail-biting affair for the Scots and Australian singers present.
Morley choir members will also be seen performing Christmas carols at Covent Garden, Oval and Westminster Underground stations in December.
