Inspired By... 2018 winners announced
Morley Gallery and the V&A Museum have announced the winners in this year's…
An intimate digital photograph resembling 18th century portraiture, a textile piece depicting the Leeds to Liverpool canal made from reclaimed saris, and a haunting sound piece inspired by Spanish ironmongery were among 13 winning artworks at the private view of Inspired by… last night.
The exhibition, taking place at Morley Gallery from 17 May – 17 June, brings together new works of art, craft and digital media created by adult learners from across the UK, inspired by the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
All the works on display were chosen by an esteemed panel of V&A curators, who also selected thirteen works for prizes presented at last night’s grand opening
We’re extremely grateful to Morley Gallery for running this competition – it’s in its 17th year and is obviously flourishing, with over 351 entries this year, so extremely tough competition.
Bill Sherman, Director of Research and Collections at the V&A
“The V&A is, the world’s oldest and largest museum of art, design and performance, established in 1852 as the South Kensington Museum with the founding mission of making works of art available to all, to educate working people and to inspire designers and manufacturers. Its founding director, Henry Cole called it ‘a book that shall always be open’.
“So it’s no surprise that the V&A today, with collections of over 2.5 million objects, from over 2000 years of art, in virtually every medium, and from all corners of the globe, continues to deliver on those principles, as demonstrated by events like this, where students make new artworks inspired those objects in our collections.”
Vanessa Ramasawmy, was awarded the V&A Prize for best use of the V&A Collections for her digital image, Lea’s Tales.
Inspired by a 18th century commode with an elaborate locking system and secret drawers, Vanessa’s photographic portrait invites the viewer to peer closer to discover the secrets within.
I’d never entered a competition or exhibited my work before so it was a great opportunity. I feel very proud. It’s also really boosted my confidence and I’m looking forward to pushing my work further and maybe finding my place somewhere in the art world.
