The competition is run in partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum and is part of the V&A Learn programme, which is dedicated to supporting arts education at all levels including family and community work, primary and secondary schools, and adult education and training. The programme also includes a number of workshops, study days, training courses and events to help students cultivate and maintain an interest and engagement in the arts.

As the title suggests, entries to Inspired By… must take their inspiration from the extensive collections on display at the V&A and V&A Museum of Childhood. This gives entrants an exciting opportunity to follow in the footsteps of renowned artists and designers like Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Jeremy Deller and Dries van Noten, all of whom have researched the collections at the V&A to create their distinctive works.

Students are invited to visit the museums in person to view the collections, or browse the online catalogue, which lists over 1,118,294 objects and 361,132 images, at

All entries will be viewed by curators from the V&A, with the possibility to be shortlisted for public display in Morley’s unique exhibition space, Morley Gallery. An awards ceremony will also be held at the exhibition’s private view, with prizes including a year’s V&A membership, tickets to a selection of V&A exhibitions in 2018, and a number of cash prizes.

The competition is free to enter, and is open to all students aged 18 and over who are currently enrolled on an adult education course in the UK. Works entered must have been created during the 2017-18 academic year and show a clear connection to the V&A collections.

The competition categories for this year are: Ceramics, Glass and Stained Glass; Jewellery; Sculpture; Textiles and Fashion; Printmaking; Drawing and Painting; Digital Media including Photography, Video and Sound; and works in any medium inspired by the V&A Museum of Childhood.

Interested students can enter by submitting up to five digital images of their chosen work through the Inspired By… website: The closing date for entries is 12 March 2018.

“We are thrilled to continue our successful partnership with Morley College London and support the Inspired By… competition. Education is built into the DNA of the V&A, having been a driving purpose in its founding in 1852. We aim to build on that positive legacy and, through initiatives such as Inspired By…, we’re able to celebrate and showcase contemporary creative talent, which will in turn inspire generations to follow. I wish all entrants the best of luck and look forward to seeing the final exhibition.”
