The Foyer: Millinery at Morley
As part of London Hat Week, Morley Millinery students and their tutors will show…
Morley Students Clare Spicer, Jo Wong, Louise Clark & Dusia Kneebone (students on Professional Hat Making & Hat Making for Stage & Screen courses) entered the recent’ Feltmakers’ Millinery Design Awards’. This competition is set by the Worshipful Company of Feltmakers in conjunction with Walter Wright’s Millinery Factory & Royal Milliner & Judge Rachel Trevor-Morgan.
This is a national Competition attracting entrants from across the UK. Applications were invited from fashion students, employees working in the headwear industry of a trainee or apprentice status & those starting their own Millinery business.
The brief set was to design & make a hat that was suitable to be manufactured /mass produced using felt. Students worked with Morley Tutor Philippa Eyland- Gentle Professional Milliner & Stylist, to create a range of creative solutions to the brief.
Tutor Philippa said ’The students gained valuable experience of what it is like to work in the way professional Milliners do, to a tight deadline & all did extremely well in working under pressure individually & as a team to meet the deadline.’
Morley Student Clare Spicer was selected as a finalist for her beautifully designed & finished hat inspired by Autumn & Nature.
Royal Milliner, Judge Rachel Trevor-Morgan said ‘We thought her hat was really beautiful and showed fantastic craftsmanship and we also loved her inspiration’.

“It was very challenging to create ideas which met the competition criteria. Drawing diagrams & designs in a sketchbook helped to show the development. It was hard work but enyoyable & a great addition to the normal teaching curriculum.”
“I enjoyed exploring how to manipulate millinery felt without using glue & handstitching everything. All the competitors put in a lot of hard work & effort.”
“Entering the competition motivated me to be more adventurous with my designs & to finish them to a high standard .It was fun to see the hats that others were submitting & very inspiring.”
