This exhibition is the culmination of a year’s study at Morley by Livi Mills and Oli Epp, The Zsuzsi Roboz Trust Scholars for 2017-18.
Both scholars followed tailored programmes of study that allowed them to take their work in new directions in an open-ended way. At times, this meant going back to being a beginner, which can be a challenge in itself. Individual tutoring and mentoring have also played an important role this year.
This Scholarship is offered in memory of the celebrated painter, Zsuzsi Roboz. Funds have been made available to support two figurative artists of promise working in any medium to study for one year at Morley College London, thanks to the generosity of the Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Art Trust.
Out of Place reflects the developmental nature of the Scholarship by including test pieces and experiments alongside finished artworks.
Oli Epp’s paintings examine human interaction in the post-digital age. He uses the visual language of branding and the interplay between graphic and painterly surfaces to echo how our real and digital lives merge.
Livi Mills works in printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and sound to create artworks about ‘non-place’ – the spaces that we pass through without recognising. She combines traditional and digital techniques to construct new, sensory landscapes.
