The Story of a Lambeth Midwife
October 17, 2016 @ 12:00 am - November 3, 2016 @ 12:00 am
“SEVEN O’CLOCK AND NOT A BABY BATHED”
The story of a Lambeth midwife
Elizabeth Matilda Halston (nee Dunkley) trained as a midwife in the 1920s, and embarked on a career that was to last nearly 25 years. This culminated in seven years as a domiciliary midwife with the London County Council when, in the most difficult and dangerous circumstances of war-torn Lambeth and Wandsworth, she delivered hundreds of babies to women in their own homes. She was an unsung hero of the Second World War, an ordinary woman who made an extraordinary contribution to the community in which she lived. This illustrated lecture by her grandson Robert Holden is a celebration of her life and work.
The lecture will be given twice, at lunchtime the 2 November and in the evening the 11 November.
This talk is part of the exhibition WW2 – War Pictures by British Artists at Morley Gallery.
