Petros Moschos – piano
The Morley Chamber Orchestra conducted by Charles Peebles
A celebration of two towering figures of 20th-century Russian music.
This evening’s programme explores the vibrant contrasts and lyrical depth of Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. Opening with A Summer Day, Prokofiev evokes scenes of innocence and nostalgia through delicate orchestration. His Sinfonietta, composed in his early years and later revised, showcases his signature wit, rhythmic vitality, and neoclassical clarity. The concert concludes with Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a sparkling and humorous work written as a birthday gift for his son—full of charm, lyricism, and youthful exuberance.
