In this special Penny Lecture, join Morley’s archivist Elaine Andrews and celebrated artist and Morley painting tutor Kate Wilson to hear the inside story of the Morley’s mural’s past and present.
Morley’s murals were painted by leading twentieth century British artists – Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious Charles Mahoney and Martin Froy.
The Bawden, Ravilious and Mahoney murals made Morley’s name in the 1930’s. Leader of the opposition Stanley Baldwin opened the murals commissioned for the Morley’s Refreshment Room to widespread acclaim. But a decade later the famous murals were completely destroyed by a huge wartime bomb, and 57 lives were lost. In the post war era, Morley was determined to rebuild and once again be an adult education college at the cutting edge with outstanding murals enjoyed by generations of adult learners.
Featuring Morley’s rich archives, Elaine Andrews and Kate Wilson will reveal the secrets of Morley’s murals – and the role of Anthony Blunt in commissioning two giant murals measuring 58 feet long by 8 feet tall in the new Emma Cons Hall and the mystery of the missing murals. All this and more – not to be missed!
