Morley Late part of Art Night
April 17, 2018 @ 12:00 am - July 8, 2018 @ 12:00 am
A night of experimental and unearthly delights!
While a late opening of the Morley Gallery will feature Elizabeth Price’s video installation txtʃərz and associated activities, The Instant Orchestra will present immersive, experimental and improvised performances throughout the evening, including John Luther Adams’ Sila: The Breath of the World, John White’s Drinking and Hooting Machine, and an improvised accompaniment to Fritz Lang’s silent masterpiece, Woman In The Moon, all with support from The Tuned Out Art Ensemble, Middlesex University’s free improv group.
6pm – 11pm – Elizabeth Price exhibition in the Morley Gallery, open all evening
Location: Morley Gallery
6:45pm & 7:45pm – Spirits – Morley’s Tanztheater Performance Group present Spirits, a moving collage of shape, gesture and sound that examines the dynamics of individuals and groups.
Tanztheater emphasises sensations and experiences – it merges the everyday with the extraordinary and once seen it’s never forgotten!
Location: Morley Garden
6:30pm – 7:30pm – Sila, the Breath of the World – The British premiere of Alaskan-based Pullitzer-prize winning composer John Luther Adams’ 2014 work, Sila, the Breath of the World, by The Instant Orchestra led by Radio 3 presenter and DJ Max Reinhardt.
The work is for ensembles of brass, winds, strings percussion and voices who perform individually or together in ever changing combinations to produce sounds that shimmer and shift in magical and beautiful ways. Audience members are invited to move amongst the players and experience the music from different perspectives – “where a listener chooses to sit, stand or meander alters the sonic experience, and each person’s experience is different”.
Location: Emma Cons Hall
8pm – 8:45pm – Drinking and Hooting Machine – Join in a performance of John White’s Drinking and Hooting Machine. Anyone can take part – all you need is a bottle containing liquid – the bar can supply you with one!
John White was associated with Cornelius Cardew’s influential Scratch Orchestra which emerged from his experimental music classes at Morley College. White pioneered the British form of minimalism known as systems music which has influenced many composers since including the likes of Brian Eno.
Location: Morley Refectory
8:30pm – 9pm – The Tuned Out Art Ensemble – Hear what a cathode ray television-come-instrument sounds like with Middlesex University’s The Tuned Out Art Ensemble. Who knows what they will play? There’s only one way to find out…
Location: Various locations around the College
9pm – 11pm – The evening closes with an improvised accompaniment to Fritz Lang’s 1929 silent masterpiece Woman in the Moon. The accompaniment will be led by Max Reinhardt and some leading improvisors but The Instant Orchestra is formed by whoever turns up to perform and a total lack of rehearsals is its sine qua non, so bring an instrument and join us for the night or sit back and enjoy the film and the sounds that accompany it.
Location: Emma Cons Hall
