Jewellery Talk: Opals and Opal Mining in Outback Australia
February 3, 2016 @ 12:00 am - March 10, 2016 @ 12:00 am
Learn about opal mining in the Outback.
Debbie and Chris Good will be discussing the three types of opals that come from Australia and the three main opals fields from which they come from. They will talk about how the opals are mined, the types of fossils that come from each area, e.g. opalised shells from Coober Pedy and opalised wood from the Queensland fields. They will demonstrate how to recognise opal from each of the areas and the difference between a solid opal, a doublet and a triplet. They will be using examples of opals from their stock to show this. After this discussion you will be able to see many opals from all these fields with some available to purchase.
Debbie Good and her husband Chris live in Australia. They have a shack out on the opal field of Yowah in Queensland where we stay for part of the year, during the Australian winter. Chris cuts the opal from the rough material into stones suitable for setting. The couple have been involved in opal for 23 years, working with opal from all the fields and have been coming to the UK twice a year to show their beautiful stones. They prefer to travel and show their stones in person rather than selling them on the internet, as they feel that touching and appreciating the opals in your hand is a special experience.
