Cardew Space: Connect – A three plate project
October 4, 2016 @ 12:00 am - January 16, 2021 @ 5:54 am
Connect – An Exhibition of Printmaking
Connect brings together work made for a specific printmaking project set for students in September 2015. The brief was to make a three colour print, each plate to be printed in a different colour to make a three colour image. In this technique of multi-plate printing the plates must be very accurately cut so that they are exactly the same size, and the artist has to make sure they are printed exactly on top of each other. Careful planning, and consideration as to where the image on each plate overlaps with the marks from subsequent plates is key to making successful colour combinations.
As the three plates are overprinted, one in each colour, other, additional colours will be produced.
The project was an exercise in combining colour, experimenting with over printing and registration. Students could use poly carbonate plates, employing dry point methods, Lino plates, employing lino cutting or caustic etching techniques. They could also use zinc plates incorporating different etching processes including; hard ground, soft ground and aquatint.
The inspiration for the project was “Connect” which the students could interpret in a literal or abstract way. In the exhibition the students have interpreted the project in their individual ways each expressing their inspiration through different printmaking methods.
The project was taught by tutor David Holah, whose classes run on Tuesday evenings, Thursday morning and afternoon and Friday evening. To find out more about printmaking at Morley College please visit www.morleycollege.ac.uk or contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Courses are available throughout the day and evening, and at the weekends.
