Delights of Turkish Food

This November we celebrate the Turkish language and culture with our Language of the Month events. Here Morley tutor Eylem Brassington outlines some the key dishes in Turkish cuisine.

Hoşgeldiniz! is a Turkish expression meaning welcome, it is a sign hospitality and warmth! The way to respond is Hoşbulduk.

Turkey, located in the northern hemisphere, is like a bridge between Asia and Europe. It is a peninsula surrounded by the Black Sea in the north, the Agean Sea in the west and the Mediteranean Sea in the south.

The population is over 70 million and it has one of the youngest populations and  fastest growing economies in the world. The biggest cities are Ankara, being the capital, İstanbul, İzmir, Bursa, Adana and Antalya.

Turkey has been a host for 26 civilisations throughout history, which contributes to its rich heritage and various historical monuments, artifacts and its rich and delicious cuisine.

Some important elements of the Turkish cuisine are:

Turkish Adana KebabAdana Kebab
A spicy type of kebab belonging to a city named Adana in the south.

Sarma/DolmaTurkish Sarma/Dolma
Stuffed vine leaves with a mixture of rice, herbs and spices and mince meat.

Turkish coffeeTurkish coffee
A specific way of brewing and preparing coffee with a magnificent taste and foam on top.Turkish Baklava

Baklava
A delicious Turkish sweet made with hazelnuts/ walnuts within layers of pastry soaked in syrup.
