What you will learn

Develop your violin and/or viola technique, as well as general musicianship, through group tuition. Suitable for players with a year's experience.

Learning Outcomes

    Learn as a group to play pieces from Suzuki, ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses , as well as the relevant scales and techniques. Playing pieces and exercises, clapping and singing. Playing individually and in a group. Listening to the tutor's demonstrations and explanations and making notes. Asking questions and participating in discussions. Keeping track of practice tasks for the coming week. You will need to follow and contribute to discussions in English. Music Study can include the use of digital resources such as listening to recordings, watching videos online, using appropriate mobile applications and following Moodle -Morley's virtual learning environment- to enhance your learning inside and outside the classroom. Music study also offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to enhance wellbeing. Music practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment including developing creativity, developing high-concentration levels, building self-confidence, working to deadlines, being able to control nerves and working as part of a team.

    Entry requirements

    An ability of reading and playing of Suzuki Book 1 or ABRSM/Trinity Grade 1 is preferred as a starting level for Violin/Viola 2A. New comers would be considered at any time, please get in touch to know the late entry requirements.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    It is necessary to practise regularly between the lessons as the class progresses as a unit. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to another course. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

    Violin (or viola) and bow. Advice and assistance will be given by the tutor to purchase the needed books.

    This course runs throughout the year. You can also join the Morley String Ensemble which runs on Saturdays 10.30-12.30. You may also be interested in any Music Reading, Theory & Musicianship courses, such as 'ABRSM Music Theory Grade 1' and the 'Kodaly Method'. Morley College also offers courses in piano, cello, flute, clarinet, guitar and other instruments.
