What you will learn

Industry Position The Creative Industries sector in the UK is growing at three times the national average. This intensive one year diagnostic Level 4 Foundation course provides you with the opportunity to explore a broad field of arts practice before committing to any one particular discipline. The creative industry is made up of practitioners who have studied Fine Art, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Illustration, Animation, Design, Fashion, Film, Photography and diversified and adapted to the needs of the industry with a range of fundamental employable skills. Location and centre - Introduction: The Morley College Chelsea, Creative Industries Centre is based between the Kings Road and the Fulham Road in London SW10 in the heart of Chelsea. We are fortunate to be situated within a short bus ride of major galleries and Museums including the Saatchi Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Science and Natural History Museums in Exhibition Road, and the Serpentine Galleries in Hyde Park. These and other galleries are used for art and design research by our learners. This leading level 4 UAL Foundation course at Morley College will challenge and develop your interests, skills and understanding in art and design. The course is designed to encourage exploration, experimentation and risk taking through project assignments, presentations and group critiques. This will enable you to develop the quality of your work and communication skills. It will provide you with the intensive preparation and portfolio development necessary for progression to higher education and employment in the creative industry How will learning happen: You will be supported in your learning by a team of experienced arts practitioners and educators who understand from personal experience the creative journey of young artists and designers and will guide and support your development.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of the different perspectives, approaches and ethics within diverse creative practice.
  • Research, analyse and evaluate relevant information as part of their creative practice
  • Understand, adapt and safely use appropriate practical methods and skills for creative practice and production.
  • Explore solutions to complex problems through the application of practical, theoretical and technical understanding.

  • Effectively communicate and present ideas and creative practice to appropriate audiences
  • At the end of the Academic Year, the satisfactory completion of the course will be demonstrated through your portfolio and your maturity of intellectual ideas and critical skills which indicate potential for study at a higher level in art and design,

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Foundation Diploma in Art and Design [UAL]

Class format and activities

You will have access to 24 -7 learning with a blend of in college practical activities and workshops supported by dynamic online resources via Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams. Your learning is further enriched with a range of site visits across London specifically for project research, and gallery visits to contrast and contextualise your study. Projects are designed to develop practical skills, planning, conceptual and idea development and recording independent thought and reflection. Abilities required to progress to degree courses, apprenticeships, work experience, internships, voluntary or entry level roles within the art & design industry. Assessment Methods: Assessments can be a very positive experience for both staff and students, in that their main aim is to highlight your progress, evaluate strengths and weaknesses and give you feedback. Often gaps in your portfolio and recurring weaknesses can be spotted and action taken to improve them. Assessments are not exams – they are part of your learning and development process. Assessment Methods include:• Studio based group criticisms• Group and individual tutorials• Student presentations• Portfolio presentation and exhibition

Entry requirements

What background and qualifications do you need to apply? The standard requirements for entry to this course are: A L3 Qualification and English or Maths at GCSE Grade 4 or above (HE applicants require English Language IELTS level 5.0 or above, with at least 4.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.) tbc Other relevant and equivalent qualifications are considered on an individual basis. If you are under 19 and are yet to achieve your GCSE English or maths at grade 4 you will be provided with the opportunity to study these. All students are requested to attend an interview with a strong portfolio of current work including drawings, sketchbooks, 3D work, photography or any other design work that demonstrates: Research, draughtsmanship, creative thinking and problem-solving skills. interest in art, design or related subjects including textiles or photography. We are looking for students with a passion for art and design and an interest in progressing onto higher education. We receive applications from a diverse range of backgrounds, nationalities, and ages, with both UK or equivalent qualifications and experiences.

What you need to know before you enrol

This is a challenging but rewarding and enjoyable course, for many the most memorable of their art school experience. It will be collaborative, it will be varied with a range of activities and the opportunity to discover new practices, techniques and materials to extend your skills and confidence. You will be immersed in your practice and working towards your goal of achieving a place at university to progress your practice in art & design. You may have an idea what you will study at HE but that may change, the role of the Foundation course is to discover. We have high expectations, so should you and we will expect you to put in the hours and do your best. Students are recommended to use the studio for private study and to extend their work ready for interview within the second term. Access to the studio is available during the evening until 9 p.m.

Research: Visit the end of year Online or Onsite exhibitions of Foundation and BA degree work at UAL or other universities and colleges to familiarise yourself with the range of work produced by your contemporaries.
