What you will learn

The UAL L2 Diploma in Art and Design has been developed to provide 16-18 year old students with an interest in Art and Design the opportunity to explore materials, methods and processes working in well- equipped specialist studios. This course is project based in response to a range of themes to encourage and support your interest to develop your personal ideas, with a strong commitment on a practical, hands on interdisciplinary approach, creating 2D and 3D objects, designs and artwork. You will be working with disciplines such as ceramics, glass, jewellery, interior and product design using a wide range of materials including glass, metal, clay, plaster, wax, textiles and with the opportunity to explore model making processes, paper drawing and printing media. Alongside studio practice, this course covers general art and design principles, history of design, drawing skills and colour theory. Course activities include museum and gallery visits, liaison with trade and industry and exploration into the context of contemporary art and design practice in the 21st century. Our aim is to provide a sound base of practical skills and knowledge in the art and design sector, while enhancing self-confidence and revealing the potential career opportunities. Using these experiences students will access a relevant network and produce a portfolio of design work to prepare them for the next level of study or work.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Introduce yourselves to the practice of art and design using the sketchbook, journal diary, and the exploration and use of materials like glass, clay, metal, plaster, silicone, wax, textile, card, and more
• Develop and express your creative and imaginative potential working with 2D and 3D work exploring different disciplines in Art and Design
• Be aware of how contextual research is used to support creative activities
• Demonstrate personal strengths in art, design and media and to use the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in course units
• Gain a valuable educational experience, preparing you for higher level of study or other choices in the Art and Design industry

Class format and activities

Mode of delivery: in-centre with social distancing and online plus. Practical activities and workshops will take place in-centre with social distancing, whilst tutorials, research and contextual studies will take place online. The normal mode of delivery would be in – centre studio based practice where you will learn multi-disciplinary technical skills, exploring a wide range of materials and producing experimental and finished work working in our well-equipped studios. The expected mode of delivery would be a combination of in–centre with social distancing and online plus learning for tutorials, virtual presentations from artists and museums. The course is studio based with projects and an encouragement to develop personal ideas and a commitment to explore practical glass skills in the studios. Practical demonstrations with techniques in ceramic, glass, jewellery, interior design with the opportunity to explore materials and produce experimental and finished work will also be provided. The lecturers will offer personal tutorials and support you in your studies within a friendly and safe environment. Alongside studio practice, this course covers general art and design principles, history of design, drawing skills and colour theory. Course activities include museum and gallery visits, liaison with trade and industry and exploration into the context of contemporary art and design practice in the 21st century. All assessment is through the work you produce, sketchbooks and practical work. There are no exams. Assessment will be supportive with deadlines towards the end of each term in which individual feedback will be given to support your next steps. Using these experiences students will access a relevant network and produce a portfolio of design work to prepare them for the next level of study or work.

Entry requirements

You will need three GCSEs of 3 or above If you are under 19 and are yet to achieve your GCSE English or maths at grade 4 you will be provided with the opportunity to study these. This is an important and mandatory requirement of your Study Programme and non attendance will result in withdrawal.
