UAL Diploma in Art and Design Level 2 – Glass
What you will learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Introduce students to the practice of art and design using the sketchbook, journal diary, the exploration and use of materials like glass, clay, metal, plaster, silicone and more.
- Enable students to develop and express their creative and imaginative potential working with 2D and 3D work.
- Provide choices from a selection of Art and Design/ Architectural as well as kiln formed glass.
- Give students a valuable educational experience, preparing students for higher level of study or other choices in the Art and Design background.
Class format and activities
Practical activities and workshops will take place in-center , whilst tutorials, research and contextual studies will take place online. The normal mode of delivery would be in – a center studio-based practice where you will learn new glass technical skills, exploring materials and producing experimental and finished work working in the studios. The expected mode of delivery would be a combination of in-center with social distancing and online plus learning for tutorials, virtual presentations from artists and museums and debates. The course is a studio-based with projects and an encouragement to develop personal ideas and a commitment to explore practical glass skills in the studios. Practical demonstrations with techniques that will cover applique/mosaic, creating ceramic and plaster moulds, glass surface decoration like painting and sandblasting, fusing, slumping with the opportunity to explore materials, and produce experimental and finished work. The Glass Lecturer is established to give the broadest and most creative dynamic to teaching and learning. The lecturer will also offer personal tutorials and support you in your studies within a friendly environment. Alongside studio practice, this course covers general art and design principles, history of design, drawing skills and colour theory. Course activities include museum and gallery visits, liaison with trade and industry and exploration into the context of contemporary art and design practice in the 21st century. Using these experiences students will access a relevant network and produce a portfolio of design work to prepare them for the next level of study or work.
All applicants should have a portfolio of artwork; a minimum of grade 4-9 at GCSE English, Maths and Art, or the equivalent, other practically creative based art and design areas considered. You may be an applicant with advanced qualifications and/or work experience, 19+ planning a career change or wanting to fulfil an ambition to study art but need to develop a strong portfolio for a Foundation course place and university.

What you need
Students will be required to bring course files and purchase their own materials, including an A3 portfolio/s to hold flat artwork, glass, mould facilities, own glass enamels. We stock basic materials that you can buy at cost price as required. You will need to provide your own protective clothing.

Our aim is to provide a sound base of skills and knowledge, while enhancing self-confidence and revealing the potential career opportunities On completing the course you can choose to progress onto the Btec L3 Certificate in Art and Desig- glass, Btec L3 Certificate in Art and Desig- Interior Design, UAL L3 in Art and Design-Interior design, be able to present your completed portfolio for university, or apply for one of the many jobs in the design industry within the Art and Design sector.
