This course introduces students to key mathematical concepts and tools required to prepare for a GCSE Maths course. It is ideal for students who have just completed a functional skills qualification and who are interested in enrolling for GCSE later in the year.
The course aims to provide students with a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts, problem-solving techniques, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, it focuses on improving students' reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities in English, enabling them to analyse and respond effectively to various types of maths word problems. Through a combination of interactive lessons, practice exercises, and assessments, students will develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to progress on GCSE Maths programmes starting in January 2025.
Usually, there are no specific prior qualifications required to join this course. However, students are generally expected to have achieved Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English, or their Key Stage 3 education, which covers a broad range of subjects at the middle school level.
Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. Before enrolling, it's important to consider the following steps and factors:• Evaluate Personal Interest and Motivation: Reflect on why you want to pursue the course and how it aligns with your personal, academic or career goals. Ensure that you are genuinely interested in the subject matter to maintain engagement throughout the course.• Understand Course Content and Expectations: Understand the level of commitment, workload, and expectations associated with studying. This will help you gauge if you are ready to dedicate the necessary time and effort to succeed in the course.• Plan Your Study Schedule: You will be required to study outside of class time, and you will need to have access to a device connected to the Internet for your homework.
When attending a maths class, it's important to come prepared with the following items:• Stationery: Bring essential stationery items such as pens, pencils, erasers, and a sharpener, or a tablet and e-pen. It's useful to have a variety of coloured pens or highlighters for annotating and emphasising key points in your notes.• Calculator: Ensure you have a suitable calculator that complies with the exam board regulations. Check with your teacher or the exam guidelines. A scientific calculator with advanced functions is typically required for GCSE Maths. Recommended: Casio FX-85GTX or similar versions, e.g. FX-83GTX.• Maths Set: A maths set or geometry set with a compass and protractor is needed for drawing accurate diagrams and measuring angles.• Exercise Book: Carry an exercise book or notebook specifically dedicated to your maths class.• Positive Attitude and Willingness to Learn: Lastly, bring a positive attitude and a willingness to actively participate in class discussions, ask questions, and engage with the material. Having a growth mindset and a genuine enthusiasm for learning will contribute to your success in maths.
