What you will learn

A couple of Sunday masterclasses focusing on the interpretation of the solo oratorio repertoire: works such as Requiems, St John and St Matthew Passion, Messiah and other repertoire set to religious text. The course is run by the distinguished vocal tutor Neil Baker in a masterclass setting, and participants are invited to bring along two solos from any oratorio works to work with the tutor and the accompanist.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Deepen knowledge of the oratorio repertoire and styles of performance and interpretation
  • Develop confidence in singing in front of an audience
  • Develop vocal performance skills with an experienced tutor and accompanist

  • Class format and activities

    Following a master-class format, students will have regular, individual sessions to perform own-choice repertoire (as advised by the tutor), receive advice and guidance from the tutor and get feedback from fellow classmates. There will be a lunch-break between 1-2pm.

    Entry requirements

    This course is for students of intermediate and advanced levels, who have had at least three years of singing tuition.

    For this course, you need to choose and prepare one or two solos from any oratorio work of your choice.

    You will need three copies of your chosen songs (one for the tutor, one for the accompanist, and one for yourself), and any preferred personal equipment for taking notes on your progress and further goals, eg. a recording device such as your smartphone, or a notepad and pen
