Develop your vocal technique, extend classically based repertoire, and gain experience in interpretation and performing in this course for intermediate and advanced level students training with classical vocal technique.
The first part of each session will involve focusing on a particular area of vocal technique; breathing, support, resonance etc, looking at their purpose and discussing possible ways to improve them. The second part of the class will follow a "master-class" format where students will have regular, individual sessions to perform own-choice repertoire (as advised by the tutor), with live piano accompaniment. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. Achievement on your course will be measured by your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes and will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to another course.
You will need to have had at least a couple of years of vocal training, using 'classical' vocal technique. You also need to be able to sing in tune, have a sense of timing and a basic understanding of musical notation.
Due to the “master-class” format, you will need to be willing to perform solo repertoire in front of your peers and tutor. Your individual repertoire of songs will be chosen in conjunction with the tutor and/or need tutor approval to ensure they are suitable for your voice type, level of experience and personal goals.
You will need three copies of your chosen songs (one for the tutor, one for the accompanist, and one for yourself), and any preferred personal equipment for taking notes on your progress and further goals, eg. a recording device such as your smartphone, or a notepad and pen
The tutor will give you advice regarding your progress and achievement throughout the course. Depending upon this assessment, you may be encouraged to continue on this course for another period or progress to the next level, Solo Singing: Advanced, or Singing Studio: Intermediate. You may also wish to consider the range of choirs available such as Meridian Choir or Morley Choral Society, or a change of genre e.g. Jazz, Blues, Soul, Pop & Rock.
