What you will learn

Aquatint is known for creating tones in etching. This course will explore aquatint techniques using sugar lift, spit bite and white ground. If you have done some etching before, and would like to broaden your practice in etching, this course allows you to introduce new techniques and expand your visual language. Intermediate and advanced students will develop their skills and knowledge through personal projects.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use aquatint etching technique confidently .
  • Understand the potential and using sugar lift, spit bite and white ground for image making.
  • Encourage the development of a personal visual language
  • Encourage excellent workshop practice including Health and Safety in relation to self and other studio users
  • Intermediate, advanced students will be able to pursue personal projects in a chosen media.

    You will learn both through groups demonstrations and individual one-to-one discussions, with technical and critical advice depending on your needs and personal project. The tutor will give demonstrations, presentations and lead group discussions around technical and creative subjects. All students negotiate individual learning goals with tutor and record and assess these on Learning Statements.

    Entry requirements

    Suitable for those already have basic experience in etching.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Health & Safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy, and some may cause irritation in very rare cases. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant or have any sensitivities and they will advise you as to necessary precautions. Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling.

    What you need

    Please bring: pencils, paintbrushes and a sketchbook or notebook. Although protective clothing is provided it is advisable that you do not wear your best clothes. The course fee includes most studio consumables (ink, cleaning materials, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, etching plates/ lino blocks etc. These are available to buy in the department at cost price. Further requirements will be discussed at the first and subsequent classes.
