If so, public services is the course for you and the North Kensington Centre is the place to be! We have designed a brand new curriculum that will support you to gain the skills, knowledge and experience to successfully join the hugely diverse uniformed public services. This practical and assignment-based course covers different disciplines in the public services. It is taught by staff who have worked in the police, prison, and armed services, fire and rescue. Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress onto our Level 3 Public Services. Career routes include emergency, security, border and prison services, Armed Forces, community leadership. Your course will be enhanced by guest speakers from industry such as police dog handlers and firefighters, additional qualification opportunities such as emergency first aid and regular industry experience opportunities such as drill inspection and educational visits, group expedition and adventure activities.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC First Extended Certificate in Public Services [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

The course is made up of a variety of modules that include both practical and assignment-based assessments covering the range of different disciplines in the public services. You will also take part in community volunteering and fundraising drives, as well as targeted fitness training to prepare you for uniformed public services.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English and maths. A Level 1 qualification in an appropriate subject area will be considered if accompanied by a good reference for attitude, behaviour, attendance and punctuality.

What you need to know before you enrol

Work experience will form an essential part of your study programme. Start making enquiries with public services local to you to see if they accept work experience students.

What you need

You should arrive to your lessons prepared to learn with pens, pencils and writing pad. All other resources and materials you need will be provided. In the event of teaching moving online, you will need a computer with internet access for online lessons on a daily basis. Some additional fees are required to cover costs of trips and activities required to take place to gain criteria to pass this course and you will need to purchase a uniform to take part in the drill sessions.

What you can do next

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress a Level 3 Diploma in Public Services or other Level 3 programmes in the college. Career routes in the Public Services include: Emergency Services (Ambulance, Police and Fire Services); Armed Forces; Prison Services; Community Leadership; Security; Border Agency.
