What you will learn

For vintage or fashionable hats, this course will encourage you to develop your own style whilst learning different techniques. You will be taught the various techniques necessary to create your own designs. Using a variety of blocks, materials and finishes, learn professional techniques to bring your own ideas into reality. You will be encouraged to research and develop your design skills alongside your technical abilities. All students will be encouraged to pursue their own project work where appropriate. The course is suitable for anyone interested in the subject, although its desirable that students are able to use a sewing machine and have good hand sewing skills. Returning students may continue with their own projects.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • develop designs for fabric hats on buckram and paris net foundation
  • block and wire hats
  • use appropriate methods of construction
  • develop and use trims using appropriate methods and materials
  • apply a good finish to hats

    This is in-centre course. After examining and discussing examples and samples of hats, the tutor will demonstrate a variety of cutting, stitching, construction and finishing techniques, and how to safely shape foundation materials using hat blocks and steam & hot iron. Handouts and illustrated reference books will be used as support for design and skill development. Teaching will be in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis and you will be encouraged to develop your creativity.

    Entry requirements

    This is a Intermediate/Advance Course. Beginners with good hand sewing skills are welcome.
    •Suitable for people with some experience
    •Students must be able to speak, read and write in English
    •Competence in using a sewing machine is an advantage
    •Basic numeracy is an advantage though not essential.For Students to fully benefit from this course it is important that they have the correct level of existing skills. If after the first session, it becomes apparent that this is not the right course for you, we can arrange a transfer to an alternative course at the right level for you.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    You are encouraged to collect images of hats/headpieces and/or fabric manipulations which interest you and sketch design ideas. Excellent attendance and punctuality are important, for students to fully achieve the course outcomes. It is beneficial if you can spare some time for completion/experimenting of activities outside of class time.• Using a steamer and cutting patterns and fabrics often involves standing at high tables. Please let your tutor know if this is difficult for you.

    What you need

    Basic Millinery Kit. You must provide your own buckram, fabrics, trimmings, haberdashery, millinery wire etc. Buckram, millinery wire, tarlatan and domette are available to be purchased in college as well. Pattern paper and card is available for use in the studio. You will need to purchase a machine bobbin from the tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course.
