What you will learn

Join us for this 10-week journey as we build your confidence and skills in handling numbers and mathematical concepts. In this non-accredited course, you'll develop proficiency in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole and decimal numbers. We'll also cover fractions, decimals, and percentages to help you apply these skills effectively in your daily life. Plus, get ready to take the next step towards the Functional Maths Level 1 course as we lay the groundwork for your future success!

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Add, subtract, divide and multiply whole numbers with and without using a calculator
  • Compare and order decimal numbers up to 3 decimal places
  • Work out fraction and percentage parts of quantities
  • Calculate journey times using bus/rail timetables

Class format and activities

You will have in-centre lessons every week during term time. There will be compulsory homework. Microsoft Teams will be used for assignments and additional learning, including discussion boards, group chats, private messaging, and submitting coursework. Assessment methods: Achievement in your course will be measured by formative assessment against the learning outcomes. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, such as progression to another course.

Entry requirements

Maths and English skills at Entry Level 3 or equivalent. All new candidates will be invited to take an initial assessment followed by an interview to check their current skills and suitability for this course. Students moving up from Functional Skills Maths Entry 3 will be invited to join based on their attendance and homework completion records.

What you need to know before you enrol

You are expected to attend every session. 90% or above attendance and punctuality are required from all students. This course requires personal study time in addition to the completion of homework. Please set aside at least 5 hours per week for these activities. It is important that you have access to a computer connected to the Internet outside of class to complete some of these activities.

What you need

You will need a calculator, writing materials, a notebook, a geometry set, and a computer/tablet for your homework. Please ensure you have access to the Internet for completing assignments. Mobile phones alone may not be suitable for completing maths assignments.
