What you will learn

The course is designed for students with a general interest in and a basic knowledge of Polish. It will cover a wide range of topics based on students’ own interests and will use a communicative approach, with emphasis on speaking. Students will build their confidence by engaging in interactive activities, participating in individual, group and pair work and developing basic reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in Polish.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • communicate in basic everyday-life situations, including food and shopping
  • understand simple texts and find information on simple topics
  • develop a further insight into the Polish culture.

    Practise speaking, listening, reading and writing as you work collaboratively with your classmates. Develop learner independence by working through some tasks at your own pace. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress your individual learning aims will be established during the course. It is important that you are committed to regular attendance. You will have regular and constructive feedback from your tutor

    Entry requirements

    Basic knowledge of Polish (i.e. 9-18 hours of previous exposure) is desirable.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Regular work is given to be done at home to support and consolidate your learning. You should therefore dedicate some time for this on a weekly basis. Access to IT equipment is required in order to access your remote lesson by Microsoft Teams and homework on the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) for independent study between lessons. In addition to the IT equipment required to access your remote lesson by Microsoft Teams, you will need your own device to look up words occasionally, a vocabulary book and pen and paper.

    If required, a course book will be negotiated at the start of term. Please bring your own device, and a notebook and file to each lesson.
