What you will learn

A Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Human Biology will provide learners with a distinct Science GCSE qualification. It is suitable for anyone wishing to obtain a GCSE in the field of Science but is especially suitable for students looking to pursue further scientific study in Biology, or to more technical careers such as medicine, dentistry, physiology, genetics, and epidemiology, as well as those wishing to train as a Primary teacher. This course will be offered online using Microsoft Teams. Learners will be provided with a login via the IT department and they will be sent a link to join the weekly meeting.

    At Morley College we are committed to doing more than simply passing an exam. The course will be offered fully online and classes will take place using Microsoft Teams taught by our expert teachers. You will learn through a mixture of lecture, interactive workshop, practical demonstration, group discussion and e-learning resources. A large component of the course will focus on developing skills in problem solving and scientific thinking in preperation for the exam but also for further study. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above during 2 exams in June. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and your future goals i.e.: progression to an advanced- level course.

    Entry requirements

    Whilst there are no specific entry requirements; a good working knowledge of Maths and English is essential. Applicants will be invited to determine their suitability for the course.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Your iGCSE course will be very enjoyable, but also requires real dedication and commitment if you are going to succeed. Your course requires attendance one evening a week for 4 hours and the course runs from the beginning of September to the end of May. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course also requires significant study/completion of activities outside of class time.The course is assessed by two externally-assessed papers: Human Biology Paper 1 - 1 hour 45 min written examination (50%), Human Biology Paper 2 - 1 hour 45 min written examination (50%)

    What you need

    You will require all stationary for your course (pens, pencils, ruler, paper) and a scientific calculator. You will also require access to a computer/tablet and reliable internet access in order to attend your sessions. Obtaining your own copy of the student book to accompany the course is also recommended.

    The course will provide a solid foundation in health sciences so you can apply to study a L3 course such as A level Biology, Access to HE: Science, Access to HE: Health and Human Science, L3 diploma in Medical Administration or L3 Health and Social Care (additional entry requirements may apply).The course provides a series of transferable skills making it useful for entry to a range of University Courses and for employment.
