What you will learn

Pattern cutting is the engineering of fashion. On this course you will be encouraged to think analytically, focus on problem solving in pattern making, develop your confidence using knowledge you have gained in Beginners Pattern Cutting courses and prepare to complete patterns on a more professional level. Intermediate and Advanced levels are about problem solving, combining pattern cutting instructions and experimentation, based on what you already know and developing from there. Advanced level students will be pushed to hone their skills to a more professional level and study more complex garments and skills. The tutor will give you challenging exercises to push your knowledge and translation of a given image even further. This course offers you a structured programme to develop your existing skills and in order to gain from the course you must have previous experience in pattern cutting (at least two terms of beginners level, one of which covering the bodice block).You will be learning manipulation techniques to produce a wider range of garment features and styles on a more complex level. The course will start with structured group exercises accompanied by hand outs and end with a personal project where you draft a spec drawing based on your own design, complete a pattern for it and stitch a toile to test the silhouette and pattern. The course will briefly cover exercises from all blocks (bodice, skirt, trousers, sleeve) and is only suitable for students who completed at least 2 terms of beginner’s level. If you wish to extend & develop your skills fully, it is recommended you attend additional 3 terms.

To translate patterns and problem solve in 2D and 3D
To understand and develop technical drawing skills for the purposes of pattern cutting
To develop a pattern from your own design
To use the toiling process for testing your ideas

Class format and activities

Teaching is both as a whole class and on an individual, one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, handouts and other technical support material where appropriate. The tutor will give demonstrations of technique and lead discussions.

Entry requirements

This is an Intermediate and Advanced level course. Before you enrol, you should have achieved the following at least:• Have completed 2 terms of Pattern Cutting: Beginners• Understand correct labelling of work, what a grainline is and how to use it• Understand what a notch is and how to use it• Understand what seam allowance is and how to use it• Be able to use the technique of Slash and Spread• Be able to use techniques for dart manipulation, including pivoting• Have experience of making toiles to fit and adjust patterns• Basic sewing skills using 2 threads domestic machine• Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English• Mathematics and numeracy skills are essential

What you need to know before you enrol

• Working on patterns and cutting fabric can involve standing at high tables. Please let your tutor know if this is difficult for you.• Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control• The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear Building and there is wheelchair access via a stair-lift.• Please also note: there is no eating or drinking allowed in the fashion studios – only bottled water is allowed.

• paper scissors• sharp fabric scissors• dressmaker’s pins• tape measure• tracing wheel• sewing threads• masking tape or magic tape• notepad and 2/3 colour pens, 2H pencil, sharpener and eraser• A4 ring binder file Also:• ‘Metric Pattern Cutting’ by Winifred Aldrich is the reference book used on the course. It is useful for you to have your own copy but not essential• some pattern cutting tools are provided for use in the studio• paper and card are available for use in the classroom• calico for toiling is available at cost price from your tutor• you will need to purchase a sewing machine bobbin from your tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course
