What you will learn

This online course will follow a structured programme covering approaches to abstract painting: materials & techniques, colour mixing, relationships & optical effects and abstracting from places, spaces, journeys & memories. Returners will develop personal projects with support from the tutor.

  • Class format and activities

    Practical projects Hand-outs Short talks Visual aids/demonstrations Individual tuition Group review/discussion. This is a practical class and you will spend most of your class time drawing and / or painting. The tutor will send you project briefs by email each week with options for 1:1 tutorial support. The class will use group discussions, guidance on set activities, explanations and presentations. Returning students are welcome, and projects will be agreed in discussion with the tutor.

    Entry requirements

    The course is suitable for complete beginners to painting and those with experience in observational work. Experienced students are also welcome and will be able to refresh their skills or explore new techniques and materials.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    This course is held in-centre on the first floor of the D studio block. Access is by stairs only.

    What you need

    Painting materials: acrylics, brushes, mixing palette, water containers etc. You are advised to wear protective clothing e.g. old shirt or apron.
