What you will learn

Visit the Estorick Collection to see the new Morandi exhibition, with a private lecture and opportunity to draw in the galleries from his work, including many etchings. Follow up with three weeks in the printmaking studio making an etching inspired by and using Morandi’s techniques.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • explore Morandi's work through drawing exercises, working in the Morandi exhibition directly from drawings, paintings and prints
  • learn about Morandi's work and methods
  • make your own hard ground etching inspired by Morandi's work
  • learn how to make and print a hard ground etching
  • take home proofs taken at different stages and a finished print

  • Class format and activities

    The first week will be at the Estorick Collection, 39A Canonbury Square, London N1 2AN. Subsequent weeks will be in the print studio at the Waterloo Centre. Teaching will include demonstration group discussion and one-to-one. Personal time to explore and develop your own work. Group show and tell to discuss achievements and learn from the work of your colleagues on the course.

    Entry requirements

    No specific requirement. An interest in art, printmaking, the work of Morandi. An interest in learning how to make and print an etching plate.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Health and safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy, and some may cause irritation in very rare cases. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant or have any sensitivities and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.. Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling.

    What you need

    Drawing equipment. Sketchbook, notebook. Pencils. Apron. Rubber gloves ( we have both of these to borrow if you don't have). You will be sent an email before the start of the course with information and requirements for the gallery visit. A folder to take your work home in. You will need approx £10-15 cash to pay for etching plate and paper- the final price will depend on the size you work. Plus there will be an additional cost for entry to the gallery- tbc.
