Millinery for Beginners – Felt Hats
What you will learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Work with specialist equipment and materials adhering to health and Safety in the studio and home.
- Choose how to, combine, prepare and use millinery blocks known as blocking techniques
- Apply millinery wire to edge a felt hat along with stiffening techniques for felt
- Develop different edging and trimming techniques for felt
- Use traditional techniques for petersham ribbon – head ribbon, edging, trimming
- Join a brim and crown on 2-piece blocked felts
Class format and activities
Mode of delivery will be in centre with social distancing. Typical activities will take place in the format of direct teaching with tutor demonstrations, peer discussions, practical skill development and use of examples. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have the opportunity to discuss this with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. i.e progression to another course. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
Suitable for beginners
What you need to know before you enrol
Students will have enough time to make at least one felt hat with both brim and crown, and are likely to have time to do even more. Please budget approximately £40-£80 per full hat depending on the type of felt used and where it is purchased. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. Students are generally expected to spend some time outside of class for completion of activities.
What you need
Students enrolled on this course will be contacted before the start of term with information about equipment and materials needed for the course. £20-£30 should be budgeted for a basic millinery sewing and tools kit for this course – this kit will last well beyond this course and will carry students through the year if they choose to enrol on other millinery courses. Further details on materials and equipment will be discussed on the first day of the course.
What you can do next
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to continue on with further Level 1 Award in Millinery courses, which introduce students to other materials.
