What you will learn

The course “Men’s basic trouser block drafting” will equip you with the knowledge and specialist skills needed to draft a trouser block pattern to standard body measurements from an industry perspective. Throughout the 10-week course, you will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate the drafting of the basic trouser block.
  • Assess the drafted trouser block for tolerance and fit.

  • Class format and activities

    Teaching on this course is as a whole class and one-to-one basis using demonstration, discussion, examples, samples, handouts, learning journals, and other technical support material where appropriate. The teacher will give demonstrations of technique and lead discussions. Students learning journals and feedback sessions from your tutor set in a constructive and supportive environment would be used to check your weekly progress to ensure you get the best out of the course.

    Entry requirements

    All levels welcome. No previous experience required, activities in class can involve standing at high tables for a period of time. Please let the tutor know if this would be difficult for you. Please note that eating and drinking is not allowed in the fashion studio. You are allowed to have bottled water. Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English, mathematics and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Activities in class can involve standing at high tables for a period of time. Please let the tutor know if this would be difficult for you. Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control. The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Chelsea Hortensia building and there is lift access to the first floor. Please note the eating and drinking is not allowed in the fashion studios - you are allowed to have bottled water.

    What you need

    Pattern cutting equipment: Metre rule, tape measure with metric/imperial measures, hip curve, French curves, graded set square/pattern master, ‘L’ square, Lead pencils-Hard lead '4H' , Pencil sharpener, Pencil eraser, masking tape and glue, Colour pencils, sharpie, Tracing wheel, Awl/ bradle, Notcher, ¼ and 1/5 scale squares, Paper scissors, Tailors’ shears, Pilot pens, A4 plain notebook, Lever arch file with clear files.
