Make your own Corset: Construction and Finishing

After examination and discussion of examples, the tutor will demonstrate drafting, cutting, appropriate stitching, construction and finishing methods. Handouts and other printed materials will be used as support for design and skill development. If you are a returning student, you will be able to build on the work you have already done. Teaching is delivered on site as a whole class, involving small-group discussions and teaching, demonstrations, photos and explanations of each stage of construction, as well as group discussion/ troubleshooting with the tutor. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback. Good attendance and punctuality is crucial. You will not achieve the desired learning outcomes if you cannot attend fully and dedicate the required time between courses. Please inform your tutor regarding any lateness or absences. Teaching will be in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis and you will be encouraged to develop your creativity. This is a practical course so students will need to be comfortable having their corset fitted to themselves. On fitting days, students are advised to wear close-fitting modest clothing such as T-shirts and Leggings for optimal fit. Private fitting areas will be available.

Working on patterns and cutting out fabric can involve standing at high tables for a period of time. Please let the tutor know if this would be difficult for you. Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control. The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Sear building and there is a lift access to the first floor. Please note the eating is not allowed in the fashion studios - you are allowed to have bottled water.

The right tools and equipment for this specialist area are essential and these will be discussed during the first lesson and a list will be provided but you should bring:• a basic sewing kit: fabric scissors, sharp trimming scissors, dressmaker’s pins, tape measure• dressmaker’s tracing wheel and carbon paper• a selection of hand sewing needles and threads• notepad and pens, pencils, sharpener and eraser Also:• you must provide your own fabrics, haberdashery, threads, etc. but these will be discussed during the first lesson• paper and card are available for use in the classroom• calico for toiling is available at cost price from your tutor• you will need to purchase a sewing machine bobbin from your tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course
