Experience first hand how the dress reformers of the time were influencing daily fashions and making it possible to enjoy the sun and sporting activities with less restrictions. Making corsets is an essential skill needed to create a proper historic silhouette and is much sought after by Theatre and Film production companies as well as in the fashion industry.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate ability to construct a corset from your pattern
  • Analyse fit and complete final alterations after fitting
  • Critically select appropriate materials for corset, including fabrics, interlinings and boning types relevant to period/design/purpose
  • Construct a corset utilising professional finishing skills specific to period/design/purpose

Teaching is delivered on site as a whole class, involving small-group discussions and teaching, demonstrations, photos and explanations of each stage of construction, as well as group discussion/ troubleshooting with the tutor. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback. Good attendance and punctuality is crucial. You will not achieve the desired learning outcomes if you cannot attend fully and dedicate the required time between courses. Please inform your tutor regarding any lateness or absences. Teaching will be in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis and you will be encouraged to develop your creativity. This is a practical course so students will need to be comfortable having their corset fitted to themselves.
