What you will learn

Develop observational skills through the use of a life model. This is an intensive study of the human form. All abilities welcome. Beginners are guided through 6 week drawing course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Gain an understanding of skeletal structure and proportion
  • Gain an understanding of how bones and muscles shape the outlines of the body
  • Keep a sketchbook journal to document observations and learning
  • Take part in critiques and assessments of work online

  • Class format and activities

    This is a practical class and you will spend most of class time drawing and/or painting at home. Your tutor will send you a lesson plan and handouts by email every week, with instructions and options for tutorial support. The class will use Team or Zoom for group discussions and for short lectures on artists’ work, and, where helpful, you will be sent links to demonstration videos of techniques and materials. Your tutor will offer individual feedback by email on any images of your work that you send in.

    Entry requirements

    Energy and enthusiasm and an interest in the human figure. Some drawing experience is helpful (e.g. Drawing for Beginners or Life Drawing and Painting).

    What you need to know before you enrol

    This is an online course, offered during COVID-19 restrictions. The tutor will be available online during class hours, and will provide individual feedback where possible. You will need to have access to a computer and an email address to receive project briefs and materials You will be asked to download either Teams or Zoom (instructions to be sent in advance of the course start date). You will need to supply your own art materials.

    What you need

    You will need access to a computer; a phone for photographing your work will also be useful. It is recommended to have a designated art place, however small where you can draw and/or paint. You will need to supply your own materials. These should include: cartridge paper (e.g. a sketchbook), soft pencils (2B-6B), eraser, sharpener, willow charcoal, and if painting, watercolour, oil or acrylic paints, prepared paper or canvas, brushes, mediums.
