This three day course will give you an introduction into the art of jewellery making using precious and base metals with the help and guidance of an experienced tutor. You will cover skills such as saw piercing, filing, soldering and polishing with the aim to develop confidence in the jewellery studio while creating some beautiful pieces of jewellery. This course is suitable for beginners or as a refresher of basic jewellery making techniques.
This is a practical course and you will start making your own pieces of jewellery from the start. The tutor will demonstrate various techniques before you do it and will provide constant feedback. This set of Saturday classes focusses on basic jewellery making techniques - You will learn how to saw pierce, anneal, texture, form and solder metal to make a ring, a keyring with a simple chain and a pair of earrings. You will start with base metals and progress onto working in silver. You will learn how to polish and finish your pieces. You will gain confidence with tools and handmaking bench skills while making individual and unique pieces of jewellery.
This course is suitable for complete beginners and students who want to gain further confidence in jewellery making techniques.
You need a moderate level of fitness and arm strength to be able to form metal. Jewellery making requires working with tools and small objects so please bring glasses if needed. Please wear sensible shoes- no open toed sandals. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions
All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals. There are some items you will need to purchase yourself such as precious metals (silver). Your tutor will help you assess your metal requirements for each project and provide a list of suppliers. Some silver will be available to buy from your tutor should you wish to use it. Please bring: an apron, a small hard back notebook & a fine permanent pen Please wear suitable footwear.
