What you will learn

Make a small bowl or an embossed tile in copper by using the traditional silversmithing techniques of blocking out, hammering and planishing. Learn the invaluable skills of how to manipulate metal with the use of hammers and punches.

    You will learn how to transfer a simple image onto a sheet of copper. With the use of embossing hammers working with sandbags and wooden blocks you will learn how to create a three dimensional relief panel by raising some areas of your image and depressing others. We will also explore raising a small copper bowl. This is a practical course and will involve the use of hammers so a certain amount of arm strength will be required. The emphasis of the course is on individual tuition. Each stage of the process will be demonstrated both to the group and to individuals as appropriate.

    Entry requirements

    Previous experience in this technique is not necessary however familiarity with the jewellery studio environment and the use of hand tools will be beneficial.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. This is a practical course and will involve the use of hammers so a certain amount of arm strength will be required. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions

    What you need

    • Apron, permanent marker pen• A choice of simple / bold designs , which the tutor will assess with you on the first lesson.• Copper sheet will be provided for the project but there may be a small charge for additional work in copper / brass.• Please wear sensible shoes- no open toed sandals

    What you can do next

    The course provides an excellent start to silversmithing or a refresher or taster of new techniques. You could continue on to beginner, intermediate or advanced jewellery making classes at Morley College.
