What you will learn

Learn jazz styles and numbers, and relate your singing to a basic, understanding of jazz harmony. This course is suitable for those who can already sing with some confidence, but with no previous jazz experience.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • recognise and understand the basic structure of the blues
  • interpret jazz standards in various styles
  • use some basic strategies to improvise and scat over jazz standard songs
  • use some strategies to improve your interplay with other musicians
  • use basic performance techniques

    Vocal warm ups Learning blues and jazz repertoire Improvising exercises Listening and discussion. Assessments will be made based on student's performance during the sessions.

    Entry requirements

    The ability to sing in tune and in time. An appreciation and love of jazz.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires regular practice (including listening) outside of class time.

    What you need

    Checking class online platform regularly to always be updated about the contents of the lessons and follow any instruction. Occasionally you will need to print your charts and lyrics.
