What you will learn

Develop your technique, musicianship and knowledge of jazz through playing, listening and group discussion. Taught online in a masterclass format. For players with a least four years experience playing jazz piano. There will be an opportunity at least once a term to perform along with a professionally produced backing track to support learners and help them to improve their jazz ensemble playing skills.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Accompany singers and soloists in a variety of jazz styles
  • Improvise confidently over functional and non-functional harmony
  • Apply your knowledge of standard sequences to other commonly played jazz tunes and your own compositions
  • Reharmonise both simple and more complex songs
  • Play with good time and a swinging jazz feel
  • Develop good practice routines to solidify new ideas and to strengthen technique

    This class will be delivered online. The lessons will include both teaching to the whole group with the possibility of dividing into small groups too. All students will have an opportunity to play and ask questions throughout. Frequent references will be made to recordings and videos of jazz greats in order to understand better the application of jazz theory. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

    Entry requirements

    Several years of previous jazz piano study, completion of Jazz Piano 4A, B and C Working knowledge of basic jazz theory, chord symbols, modes, etc Well developed improvisation and coordination skills Time to practise between classes and commitment to attend every week Music reading ability

    Homework will be given every week and students must be prepared to spend time doing the given assignments and preparing tunes for performance in class.
