Over the course we will cover: a contextual traditional and contemporary look at Japanese woodcut, develop advanced cutting using Japanese tools, printing techniques using hanshita and bokashi, and create an edition of prints onto handmade Washi paper

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand and be able to contextualise Japanese Woodcut through research into traditional and contemporary practioners
  • Develop with increasing confidence more advanced cutting techniques
  • Progress through sumi brush line drawing to the traditional process of hanshita transfer to make a print based on ukiyo-e practices
  • Practise different kinds of bokashi to create graduated tones in your print
  • Utilise the different techniques to design and print an edition of prints onto specialist washi paper
